Craving Irish treats when living abroad? Now there’s a solution!

A new website has recently been launched … and for any Irish person living abroad, it can be the closest thing to doing your food shop at home.

A Slice of Home sends Irish treats to people all over the world so you can either surprise a friend with their favourite Cadbury bar abroad, or stock up on some Barry’s Tea for yourself if you can’t stand the tea where you’re living.

The website has a wide selection of Cadbury chocolate, Tayto and King Crisps, as well as Lyons and Barry’s Tea. And of course, they’re all big sized versions to last the typical Irish person a while.

All the delivery prices are set by the An Post postal service and the website guarantee that they do not gain profit from the delivery end of things as they believe it can be expensive enough.

So if you’re looking to buy some Irish treats for that homesick friend of yours, check out the website here.

We here at The City took to the corridors of Dublin Institute of Technology to see what food some of the students missed most when they were living abroad.

  • Video: Outside of Dublin, how is the Marriage Referendum debate shaping up?

On May 22nd, the country will vote on the same-sex marriage referendum which will decide if gay marriage is voted into law.

If you haven’t heard anything about the referendum, you quite simply must have been living under a rock for the past few months. In recent weeks, the ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ campaigns have been in full flight with both sides vociferous in their criticism of the other.

There has been some controversy, with the ‘No’ side complaining that their banners are being defaced and pulled down. Then there was the mural on the side of the building in Dublin, depicting two men hugging, which was brought to the nation’s attention when Dublin City Council threatened to remove it.

But the vast majority of the referendum debate and news coverage has been focused around Dublin. The capital is obviously of huge importance but we already know that the majority of Dubliners are voting ‘Yes’, what about the rest of the country and how they view the upcoming referendum?

In light of this Donal, Daniel and James took the City.ie on a tour of Wexford to explore people’s opinions on the referendum in the sunny south east and investigate whether there is a rural-urban divide.

The key finding was that the majority of people were firmly in favour of a yes vote. This would appear to be in line with the popular view in the capital. Whatever way the vote goes on May 22nd, it is important not to forget the rest of the country and be sucked into a city only view of the vote.

Holidays are coming – Top Christmas Adverts of 2014

TheCity.ie reporters, Leah King and Amy Grehan, recently braved the cold and took to the streets of Dublin to find out what the public’s favourite Christmas ads of 2014 are so far.

As we could have guessed, the original Coca Cola Christmas ad was the number one choice for most, both young and old. As one interviewee said: “You know Christmas has begun when you see the Coca-Cola ad on TV and hear the words ‘Holidays are coming, holidays are coming’.”

The Coca-Cola Santa Claus, created by artist Haddon Sundblom back in 1931, is famous throughout the world and helped to define the look and personality of the modern day Santa Claus.

Another popular choice among the public was this year’s John Lewis Christmas ad, which follows the adventures of Monty the penguin.

According to John Lewis: “This year’s advert tells the story of a little boy, Sam, and his best friend, Monty the penguin. This is a tale of friendship, love and giving someone the gift they’ve been dreaming of this Christmas.”

Other popular Christmas ads included those by Guinness, Sainsburys and Marks and Spencers.

  • OPINION: Is Dublin Bus a reliable service?

OPINION: Is Dublin Bus a reliable service?

According to the National Transport Authority’s (NTA) quarterly figures, less than 5% of Dublin Bus services have been more than five minutes late for scheduled departure times between January 2012 and May 2013.

On its website the NTA, which publishes performance reports on all public sector transport under its remit, officially states that “Dublin Bus are required to report quarterly on their performance” to the authority. When asked by TheCity.ie how exactly these figures are collated and whether or not the process is self-regulatory, as is indicated in the aforementioned statement, the NTA refused to comment.

So, we want to know what service users from across the capital think.

Do you believe the figures? Take part in our online interactive poll below and watch the reactions of the Dublin’s commuters as we ask them whether Dublin Bus can be relied upon to get them from A to B.
