Harassment in The Parisian Subway

Photo taken by Defné Cetin “The Métro is Paris.”
The métro is a huge system of public transportation. You can be lost in the middle of Paris and there will still be a station waiting for you somewhere, at a maximum of 500m from where you are desperately trying to go.
It is used by 1.5 billion commuters per year (Source RATP), and by 48 people per second.
The Parisian métropolitain has never been a place in which you would spend your whole afternoon with your friends, chatting about how nice this place is and how the wonderful fragrance that tickles your nose is reminding you of your holidays in Greece. It has never been a place where you would stay for a long time anyway. Except if the RATP is experiencing some troubles with the railway, or if you have to commute from one side to the other side of Paris. In that case, good luck.
But more than wishing luck to you all, we should also wish some courage to the women and young girls who need to use this transportation system.
The Joys Of Being a Woman in the Métropolitain.
According to a survey made in July 2014, 94 per cent of the women have experienced sexist violence. The term “sexist violence” is grouping several types of violent acts that, in this case, women faced while taking the subway.
In the graphic below, the feminist organisation Osez Le Féminisme established a rather frightening graphic which enables us to see what most of the women have already faced during their commute.

94% women already faced sexist violence The most widespread kind of violence is about the unappropriated looks that someone gives you. 72 per cent of the women participating in the survey have experienced it. Some people might say that looking is not something violent, but they clearly have not experienced it. It is as if you were judged from head to toes, every single part of your body is being analysed by disgusting eyes.
You have to keep in mind that you are underground, in a closed wagon that only opens when arriving to a station. You have to keep in mind that this wagon can be packed, and that you can not really move. You feel trapped. The person watching you knows it, and takes a kind of perverted pleasure to watch you struggle. This person wants you to feel ill-at-ease.
You are stuck, and there is not much to do about it. You have to try to ignore it. But note down that you might experience this several times per week, and your daily journey in the métropolitain will be a stressful part of your day.
But that is not all. The survey also shows that 57 per cent of the women have already been followed in the subway, that 36 per cent already had to face exhibitionist and men masturbating in front of them and that 34 per cent of the women already experienced sexual aggression.
Female Commuters, This Doesn’t Mean That You Have to Stay at Home.
Being a woman born in Paris, I used to take the métro on a daily basis. And those things are happening, it’s a fact. I have already been followed. I have already been a victim of what we call the “frotteurs”, those guys who are rubbing their parts against you when the wagon is packed. And I’ve been shocked.
But I never stopped taking the subway to go from a point A to a point B. The métro allows you to move from one side of the town to the other, and women should not stop using it. Authorities have to take this problem more seriously. And it would deprive me from the freedom to move.
I won’t stop using it, because I am not the one responsible for what is happening.
… Or Am I ?
Let’s make it clear. Women are not responsible for what’s happening concerning the sexual harassment in the Parisian subway. Yet some people are thinking that because she wore this or she wore that, she deserved it. Campaigns have been made by organisations such as Terre des Femmes in order to fight against this type of prejudice.

Campaign made by Terre Des Femmes If you want to wear a dress, wear a dress. If you want to wear a mini skirt, wear one. No one should tell you how to dress, and you shouldn’t have to dress in a special way to avoid being raped. No one should have an “anti-rape outfit” in their cupboard. The way you dress should not be the thing that people should be concerned about. People should be concerned about how to stop those people to act in such an inhuman way.
Yet, according to the survey made by Osez Le Féminisme, three out of four women are adapting their outfits and behaviours when they are taking the métro. Because they fear what might happen to them. And this is not normal.

75% Women are adapting their behaviours when taking public transportation.
So once more, no. If you are wearing a skirt, you’re not responsible for what the others might do to you. You feel better when you wear a dress? Go for it.It’s Time to Fight Back.
Several organisations are fighting for the rights of women. As seen above, Terre Des Femmes did some powerful visuals to fight against the idea that a woman’s outfit might make her responsible for what is happening to her.
Osez Le Féminisme decided to fight back with some humour. By using the visual codes already used by the RATP – French public transportation company – they started to put up some stickers in the métro in order to raise awareness on this horrific problem.

Reaction found on twitter to Osez Le Féminisme ‘s campaign. On Tumblr, several illustrators started to take their pens and start illustrating what women are confronted to in the streets … and in the subway. The Tumblr “Projet Crocodile” – from which the illustration below is taken – is receiving several e-mails from witnesses and victims of sexist violences.

“Ok. I’m going to throw up.” Taken from the Tumblr Projet Crocodile Via drawings and events organised by such persons, the awareness is brought on this issue. And if things are not going to change immediately, those actions are surely going to help.

What do men really want in a woman?
It is said that most men fall head over heels for a gorgeous physique, hair extensions and high heels…
Although physical appearance can be the first thing men notice, when it comes to settling down ‘looks’ often come in last and count the least. For some men it can come as a surprise if they don’t recognise the woman that they’ve woken up next to.
Yes of course, there will be some men who love hair extensions. They adore seeing you when you turn your head around, and strands of your hair go all over and all that’s visible is some artificial hair trying to escape from the back of your scalp. The best part about hair extensions is when a girl feels comfortable enough to whip them off in front of the guy – that always goes down a treat.
But that is not all. Believe it or not, a gorgeous physique is besides the point. The things men like in women often have nothing to do with looks. Here are seven completely non-physical things men like in a women and I am pretty much sure that you will tick and confirm many more. Every man loves to be with a woman who is:
- A GOOD LISTENER
Many men appreciate a woman who is able to listen. They like to be heard and someone who shows them that they care. This involves being patient as well, you need to understand what a man meant to say and show them that you are there for him.
Ideally, a woman who has the ability to listen and really hear what is being said is one of the women many men love.
- SPONTANEOUS
Most men like being able to “go with the flow”. Most of our male friends find this trait very appealing. You know what, you will never hear a man sing in front of a woman but they mostly love to hear women sing even if it sounds more like howling, it does not matter, they just like it. They love to see women dance around the house, they will gladly surprise a woman if they know the reaction will be positive and they love to see them being themselves (even if it involves a certain dose of silliness).
- A GOOD COOK
It is said that the only way to get to a man’s heart is through his stomach! Well, most men would love a woman who can cook and be would be more than willing to learn to cook for them.
- A REAL GIRL
Men love a real girl not the fake one, a girl who likes to smile, the one who does not care what others are thinking of her smile, her lips, teeth or whatever. A girl who can tell a joke, who does not use “words” like OMG, a girl who will not limit herself or have a nervous breakdown every time her foundation starts running.
- CARING
Men will want to know whether you care for them or not but you have to be careful because repeating “I love you” until he cannot take it anymore is not a good way to let him know how you feel. A typical man will tell you that he loves you once and show you how much he loves you five times. Women should do the same and stop repeating “ I love you” rather than surprising him every once in a while, listen to his problems – show him everything you want to tell him because this quality is one of the very important things men like in women.
- TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF
Believe it or not taking care of yourself will show your man that you will take good care of him as well. Men actually like when women spend money on all the creams and beauty products. They enjoy all the benefits of our waxing, beauty treatments and shopping.
- NATURAL WHEN IT COUNTS
Just because we like makeup does not mean that we have to wear it all of the time. Men love a girl who is natural when it counts. But I tell you what, a guy loves it when a girl doesn’t take two hours to look perfect when, in his opinion, she is perfect no matter what. He wants a girl who is so confident in herself, who doesn’t need anything but herself.

Violence against women in Brazil: a heinous crime

Photo by Concha García Hernández Domestic violence, particularly against women and children, kills more than war. A study carried out last year found that aggression against women costs the world economy more than $8 trillion per year. This study urged the United Nations (UN) to pay more attention to domestic abuse, which receives less attention than armed conflicts such as Syria and Ukraine.
In Brazil, violence against women is a common practice. For every 100,000 women, four of them are murdered every year. This places Brazil seventh in the world for this type of crime. Many Brazilians suffer more violence at home than in public spaces, and they do not feel safe living with their own husbands.
Last week, The House of Representatives proposed a bill that increases the penalty for men who commit these crimes against women. This bill had already been approved by the Senate and now it is waiting for Presidential approval. Its text considers domestic violence as contempt and discrimination against womanhood. Once this proposal is approved, this crime will be included in the Penal Code and it will be considered as a heinous crime. Mrs Maria do Rosário, Former Minister for Human Rights, said, “It [bill] will penalize women’s deaths due to violence.”
Many Brazilians are waiting for their reality to change with this bill and hoping that the perpetrators will now be duly punished.

Strong not Skinny
From Irish dancer, to aspiring femaile bodybuilder, 21-year-old Dervla Kilmartin from Sligo has always been a fitness fanatic.
She spent her youth juggling every sport under the sun and took a keen interest in dancing and track and field.
She was so dedicated to her sport she competed in the All-Ireland track and field, just three days before sitting her Leaving Certificate.
Despite a routine jam-packed with activities, the young athlete’s education did not suffer and Kilmartin decided to amalgamate her love of sport and education and went on to study Sport and Exercise Science in University of Limerick.
She enjoyed the Fresher fun of college but soon after, decided she wanted to do something more serious.
“I always wanted to have an athletic physique to match my sporting background, and even more so now having to work with professional athletes and to be taken seriously as a woman in this industry,” explained the keen sportswoman.

Kilmartin began her training over a year ago, training daily and following a clean and healthy lifestyle. Kilmartin’s boyfriend, also a bodybuilder, introduced the gym junkie to the world of bodybuilding. While attending one of his shows, her attention was grabbed by the body fitness/figure category of women and the obsession began.
As part of her college course, she obtained a six month placement in NSW Institute of Sport in Sydnesy, Australia. It was here her love for body fitness blossomed. She admits, like any other profession, first impressions are important, especially in the fitness world.
“Let’s be honest,” she says, “image is an important factor. I wanted to feel and look strong to feel more confident in the career I wanted.”
Training began regularly while studying in Sydney. She gained valuable knowledge and training tips from various strengthening coaches and nutritionists around her. It was here Kilmartin met Jaslyn Hewitt and Kat Millar, fellow female bodybuilders, who were always on hand with tips and advice.

Jaslyn Hewitt is well known in her field. What others may consider torture, Kilmartin thrived in: “There were days I cried during the training I was pushed so hard. I loved it!”
The women Kilmartin has trained with she would consider real, honest athletes. Recently, bodybuilding has become somewhat of a fad in the media with the emergence of glamour model Jodie Marsh entering into the body fitness world.
For Kilmartin, she sees Marsh as “an insult more than anything to bodybuilding”.
“Jodie gained fame from training for only few weeks compared to the athletes in this industry who train for years and years to improve their physique constantly.”
Now training up six times a week and concentrating vividly on a healthy diet, it is a wonder how a normal lifestyle can be led.
“Obviously there does come sacrifices,” admits Kilmartin. “I would say my social life has suffered a little bit the fact I don’t go out much anymore, but that’s not the life I want to live”.

Kilmartin posts updates on her Facebook page “Dervla’s Journey – Sacrifice to Achieve” to keep her followers updated and to keep herself motivated as well. Living an Irish student life and obtaining her level of commitment are certainly two clashing lifestyles. “I have gone out partying with my friends many times sober now over the past year and a bit and I have had great fun. You have to enjoy the process too and live a balanced life.”
While Kilmartin has received nothing but support and encouragement from family and friends, it has not all been friendly feedback for her. “I got a lot of negativity from boys about my pictures. Many insulted me and mocked my pictures or statuses”.
“Women used to think I was going for the “bodybuilder” look and thought it was disgusting and I would be a tank and become huge”.
As Kilmartin’s training has progressed she says now “I do get a lot of positive comments now from both males and females as they can see it’s not a fad and it’s a lifestyle for me and my commitment and dedication shines through.”

Kilmartin is a motivated young woman who is trying to achieve a body image that promotes healthy and clean living. “From skinny/fat to strong is a healthy approach with many benefits and I would choose this look any day. Plus I get to eat extra food to feed my muscles and the feeling after a good workout is extremely satisfying and you learn so much about yourself psychologically and physically.”
Kilmartin ends on a positive note, something we could all live by: “You are only young once, so make the most of it by living a healthy active life.”
