Tommy Fury dropped out of his boxing fight with Jake Paul, due to take place on December 18 on account of a broken rib and chest infection.

Over the last few years there has been a massive increase in martial arts popularity, in particularly boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA). Influencers and professional fighters have taken to social media to promote the various sports and challenge their opponents.

MMA fighters and boxers frequently take to social media for ‘call-out’ videos and social media posts to challenge other fighters and smack talk before a fight. One of the latest high-profile boxing match news has been Tommy Fury pulling out of a boxing match with Jake Paul, which was meant to take place December 18, due to a broken rib and chest infection.

Influencer turned boxer, Jake Paul, has been undefeated in his last four fights. Tommy Fury, younger brother of two-time world heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury, has won his previous seven fights. The two have had slanderous exchanges on social media.

Previous to Tommy Fury dropping out of the fight, he posted a video of himself and Jake Paul smack talking to each other to promote the fight.

Boxer Kaci Rock, daughter of world champion boxer Jim Rock said ‘smack talk on social media has made boxing a topic of interest in daily life for people. Many people may have never watched a boxing fight in their life – but because some influencer is interested in it, it makes it appealing to other people too.’

Tommy Fury comes from a family renowned for boxing, Jake Pauls elder brother is a famous YouTuber and social media personality, who has also competed in high profile boxing matches. From the moment the boxing fight was announced to current day both Logan Paul and Tyson Fury have made slanderous remarks on social media about each other’s families.

Logan Paul ridiculed Tommy Fury saying he has ‘let the family down’ and is ‘missing a few screws’ after he pulled out of a fight with his brother Jake.

On December 3, Jake Paul retweeted a video of Tyson Fury on Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions channel saying ‘He (Tommy Fury) could probably turn up with broken ribs, a broken left hand, two left feet, his clothes on back-to-front and with the flu and still beat Jake Paul. That’s how confident I am in him beating Jake Paul.’

Following Fury’s announcement that he was no longer participating in the fight, Jake Paul said ‘When it came down to fighting, they pulled out… he has never accomplished anything himself. The only reason he is anything is because of his brother.’

When being interviewed on the YouTube channel ‘Behind the Gloves’, Tyson Fury said ‘Him (Jake Paul) and his brother are two s***house pus**** and they can never live in my world because they’re f****** bitches at the end of the day.’ He then joked:  ‘And if you don’t like the language get f*****.’

‘Social media can also negatively impact the sport in regard to the expectations. Nowadays there are videos being taken of every single training session, call-out videos from one fighter to another which are often abusive. Fights are recorded and available to everybody to watch and comment on.’ Said Rock.

Jake Paul will now fight Tyron Woodley on 18 December, instead of Fury.
