Footage from Dutch TV station NOS shows a man who forced his way into its studios brandishing a fake gun. Armed police captured the man and no-one was injured.
Gun wielding Dutch man has stormed NOS studios in the Netherlands, demanding to be put on air. Police were at the scene not long after. No hostages were taken, and the building was evacuated.
Footage of the man, seen pacing up and down the studio in a suit is available online. He was holding a long slim line pistol with a suppressor while muttering “The things that are going to be said [pause] – those are very large world affairs. We were hired by the security service”.
The main evening news was disrupted. The channel broadcasted a message which read: “In connection with circumstances, no broadcast is available at this time”.
When police stormed the office the man is seen to put down his gun and surrender. It is not clear exactly what the motive was behind the act, but police did recover a list of demands.

For the young Greek, new politics should be as simple as a traditional dish.
This Monday was an important day for many Greeks. Through the news, we could see that most of the population are looking forward to the possibility of a stable future for the country. As many people consider, politics and food are closely related. A French politician once said that the destiny of nations depended on the manner in which they feed themselves. So, is there any better place than a good restaurant to get a feel for Greek culture?
Corfu is a cozy restaurant situated on Parliament Street. With Greek music on in the background, bit by bit, we relax into the pleasant atmosphere. The narrow room consists of wooden tables and rustic style walls with exposed brick. Simple was the word used by the waiter Dimitris. For him, the new government should be worrying about giving hope to their citizens such as, “a decent salary and a good education”. Because of the absence of these “simple things” and the severe recession, he left his home. The friendly, 21-year-old Greek came from Athens and has lived in Ireland for three years. During this time, he has been working as a waiter in Corfu. Apart from the weather, living in Ireland was easy for him because he was able to make a few friends, including some from his home country.
If Dimitris had a chance to be in Greece today, he would like to serve his customers one of the most popular dishes: mousakas. This dish consists in layers of aubergine and mince topped with tomato sauce. The likeable waiter compares this dish with politics. “Everybody loves moussakas when they try it, because this is a simple dish.” He adds, “if politicians were more simple like this dish, all Greeks would love them.” The way the country has been ruled, Dimitris does not have high expectation for the future of his nation. He points outs, “It will not be a big deal for many Greeks, all they [politicians] do is promise a good future for us.”
For most of the citizens, Dimitris says, the future in Greece is bleak. Giving a broad smile, he points out, “This new government does not mean anything.”

Gordon Hill shot to fame in 2014 when a video of him heckling opposing fans at a football match involving his local team Wealdstone went viral. The video, originally taken in March 2013, involved Hill spouting taunts “You got no fans” and “You want sum? I’ll give it ya!” These catchphrases have made builder Hill into a cult hero amongst football fans and the video has earned him the title the “Wealdstone Raider.”
His new found fame led him to record a single called “You Got no fans” which reached number 5 in the UK Christmas charts and regular nightclub appearances across the UK. Hill has pledged all the proceeds from his single to Great Ormonde Street Children’s Hospital and the youth team of his beloved Wealdstone.
Last week Dublin nightclub, the Lost Society gave his Irish fans a chance to see him when they brought the Wealdstone Raider over the Irish Sea for infamous student night Black Monday. Three lucky students talked to the City about meeting him. Padraic Byrne explained how deciding to look for a change from their usual haunt of Copperface Jacks led to an unexpected meeting. “I’d usually head to Coppers but we had kind of gotten sick of going there so decided to try somewhere different, we weren’t aware he’d be there but it was a nice addition to our last Black Monday!”
Fabian Molloy revealed Hill arrived fashionably late, “It wasn’t until late in the night he appeared, drinking a pint and walking around with his personal bouncer!” Killian Breen was already a fan of the Wealdstone Raider and was delighted to get the chance to meet him. “We went there without knowing he was appearing although the club was in fact advertising his appearance in flyers and online apparently. When he appeared at first I didn’t really believe it, wandering through the smoking area with a bouncer I caught a glance of him and made eye contact, he stared at me with a knowing glint in his eye and uttered the words we all want to hear. You wan sum? It was a glorious experience, I was completely starstruck.”
So by all accounts the Wealdstone Raider’s appearance at the Lost Society was a great success. It certainly made the night for these three students and many more who came out to see him and who knows maybe we’ll see him back again before long.

Andrew Hozier-Byrne, who performs under the name ‘Hozier’ returns to the music scene with a new video titled, “To Be Alone‘’. The new video is from his self-titled debut album ‘Hozier’ which he produced himself along with Rob Kirwan. Recorded both at his home in Wicklow and in two Dublin studios. The latest track comes after a succession of hits from the debut album such as ‘Take Me To Church’, ‘Angel Of Small Death’ and ‘From Eden’.
With a little wind and calm, playing his guitar on the grass in front of the ruins of an old building, Hozier expresses a lot of feeling and emotions with his soulful voice. The beautiful video was shot in his hometown of Wicklow.
The weather in New York this week has reached dangerous levels.
Streets have been closed, school has been cancelled and the city is at a total standstill. Last night storm Juno ripped through New England with ferocious winds and snow. The storm has majorly affected cities and towns, causing flooding in some parts. Other states including Plymouth, Massachusetts, Boston and New Hampshire have also been affected by winter storm Juno.
How will Ireland react to this upcoming weeks prediction of bad weather? Met Eireann has issued a yellow warning for snow and ice from Wednesday they have also issued a yellow wind warning. Will Ireland grind to a halt just like New York or will it cope and organise more efficiently than the harsh Winter conditions of 2010-2011.
Although there is no comparison between Ireland’s expected three inches of snow and the horrendous blizzard’s being seen throughout the US. As a country that is not accustomed to such weather it is hard to predict how the conditions will affect public transport, roadways and whether or not schools and colleges will stay open.
Temperatures are expected to drop to just 2 degree whilst winds are to reach gusts of between 90-110 km/h.
Liverpool and Chelsea meet tonight at Stamford Bridge in the second leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final. Tempers flared between Diego Costa and Jordan Henderson during last week’s 1-1 draw at Anfield and with the added tension from the astonishing FA Cup results at the weekend, both sides will have plenty to prove.
Chelsea will be looking to bounce back from an embarrassing defeat to Bradford City on Saturday, where they not only let a two goal lead slip but also conceded four goals. Mourinho has said he was ashamed of the result against their League One opposition and has called on the players and fans to do more.
“If Stamford Bridge can give us 25 percent of the emotion Anfield gave Liverpool. I think we can do it”.
Meanwhile, Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool side will be hoping to continue their mid-season renaissance. With the criticism he has come into this season with his side’s league and Champions League form, Rodgers could restore a lot of faith by guiding Liverpool to Wembley.

Jose Mourinho’s first piece of silverware as Chelsea manager came courtesy of an extraordinary Carling Cup final success over Liverpool at the Millenium Stadium. Mourinho, and Rafa Benitez, had arrived in English football in the summer of 2004 and the “Special One” immediately initialised a move for Liverpool captain, Steven Gerrard – creating serious animosity between the clubs.
The lasting memory of that Cup final for most people will be Steven Gerrard’s own-goal that took the tie to extra-time, following an early John Arne Riise goal for Liverpool.

This was the year Liverpool famously came back from three-nil down to upset AC Milan and win their fifth European Cup after a penalty shoot-out. But what they sometimes forget is that Liverpool also went through an extraordinarily tight semi-final with Chelsea.
The difference between those two side came down to Luis Garcia’s “ghost goal”.

The teams met once again in the Champions League, this time in the last eight of the 2008/09 competition, with Chelsea holding a 3-1 advantage from the first leg. Rafa Benitez’s side were looking to stage another remarkable comeback win and seemed to be on their way when Fabio Aurelio and Xabi Alonso gave them a 2-0 half-time lead.
It was not to be for the Reds, however. Didier Drogba, Alex and Frank Lampard hit back for the home side and ,in doing so, ended Liverpool’s hopes of another Champions League semi-final.

Dust away the cobwebs at Dublin’s Tradfest this weekend. For most of us January is a time where money is tight and the days are dark and long. You can end your January on a high however with music and craic for five days straight. From Wednesday January the 28th to Sunday the 1st of February there will be performances around Dublin to celebrate Irish traditional and folk music.
With various performances taking place each day there is something for everybody. From Paddy Casey to The Dublin Legends, some of the best of Irish music can be experienced in the heart of Dublin. Every day over the five days there will be various artists performing around Dublin as well as other events relating to traditional Irish music.
Wednesday will see the long established Irish group Hothouse Flowers take to the stage in Saint Patrick’s Cathedral with tickets going for €35.99. For a good cause you can attend a Gala Benefit, Trad Against Racism Night. This Gala is organised by Sport Against Racism Ireland.
According to the website SARI’s ‘aim is to present sporting and cultural events that brings people together from different cultural backgrounds.’ Tickets are selling for €30 apiece.
Along with many popular acts such as Mick Flannery and The Undertones the decision to pick monumental places around Dublin for their events such as City Hall and Dublin Castle to add culture and history to the festival. Be sure to pop in to the city centre and get involved in the Trad culture for the weekend.
Are you into psychedelic music? Do you feel that you might actually enjoy an experience in which your mind will be psyched away? In which you will feel your body floating in a mystical atmosphere? I will assume that the answer is YES, I REALLY DO.
We would like to introduce you to Pond, a psychedelic band coming all the way from the other side of the planet. Or coming from outer space, who knows. Active since 2008, they just released their sixth album “Man It Feels Like Space Again” on the 22nd January 2015 (AUS). You might not have heard of this Australian band yet, and it’s fine, we will not judge you.
But if we tell you that three of Pond’s members are also playing in another Australian band called Tame Impala, we are pretty sure that you will be able to figure out which kind of psyched-outer-space-music we are talking about.
We are talking about fuzzy psychedelic beep-beep-boop pop. We lost our words, but once you are into the atmosphere set up by Pond, you can not really describe how it feels. Your problems go away, you feel that your brain is floating in an unknown yet comfortable world – you actually feel good. This is part of the magic brought to you by good psychedelic bands. This is what Pond can do for you.

Today marks 70 years since Jewish prisoners were freed from Auschwitz concentration camp. Many different communities and religions will remember the victims throughout the world on this memorable day. However many Jews did not make it out of the gates they walked in through at Auschwitz. The concentration camp is a grave site to over 1 million Jews. Today these lost souls will be remembered for their bravery and for their strength.
It is estimated that six million Jews lost their lives to the monstrous Nazi regime. Many Jews lost their fight for survival by being starved and being denied basic living conditions needed to prevent disease.What is not very well known, is the story of a young Jewish Irish woman Esther Steinberg and her infant son. Esther emigrated to France after she married a Frenchman, Ester and her son were both abducted and brought to an unknown concentration camps. While her death isn’t directly associated with Auschwitz, it is associated with the overall devastation that the concentration camps brought throughout Germany, Poland and Bavaria.
To celebrate the liberation of the Jews at Auschwitz, America has declared the 27th of January as their International Holocaust Remembrance Day. To celebrate the 6 million victims of the Holocaust who lost their lives too soon simply because of their religious beliefs. To honour their survival, over 300 Holocaust survivors will not only gather to remember their lost family members or friends, but also celebrate the life they have been able to live because of the freedom granted to them by the Soviet Union on the 27th of January 1945.
